A PhD position in Mathematical Physics

Highlights:
  1. A PhD position in Mathematical Physics (Quantum gravity) will be available in the Emmy Noether research group: Conceptual Questions of Quantum Gravity and Mathematical Structures in Three-dimensional Gravity.
  2. The starting date is June 2010 (or later). The successful applicant will work on a project related to three-dimensional (quantum) gravity in the framework of the group's research programme under supervision of Dr. Catherine Meusburger.
  3. The successful applicant will be part of the Emmy Noether Junior Research Group Conceptual Questions of Quantum Gravity and Mathematical Structures in Three-Dimensional Gravity in the Algebra and Number Theory group, Department of Mathematics at Hamburg University.
  1. The group is included in the Collaborative Research Center SFB 676: Strings, Particles and the Early Universe and the Hamburg Center forMathematical Physics . We interact closely with the research groups at the Department of Mathematics, the Theoretical Physics Group at the Department of Physics, the DESY Theory Group and have ties to manymathematical physics and quantum gravity research groups in Europe and overseas.
  2. The salary is one half of level TV-L 13 according to the TV-L standard payscale for public sector employees. This corresponds to one half of BAT IIa on the previous scale.
  3. Eligibility :
Applicants must have a Master degree (or equivalent) in either Mathematics or Physics.
  4. They should be strongly motivated to work on topics at the border between mathematics and physics and must demonstrate excellent background knowledge in both subjects. As these subjects arise in the research, previous research experience and in-depth knowledge in the following is particularly welcome:
  • general relativity
  • differential geometry
  • algebra and representation theory
  • Lie groups and Lie algebras
  • gauge and field theory.
  1. Candidates interested in applying for the position should email the following application documents before April 11 2010 to Catherine.Meusburger@uni-hamburg.de:  detailed Curriculum Vitae list of courses taken with brief description of content, transcript of degree summary of Master thesis (1-2 pages) names and contact information of two referees which have agreed to be contacted and to provide an opinion about the applicant
