Highlights:
- Build and lead a multidisciplinary single molecule sequencing (SMS) data-analysis and bioinformatics team. The goal of this team is to establish a complete work-flow information-processing solution to SMS. This data-analysis and bioinformatics position functions as a key bridge between bioinformatics specialists and advanced genomics scientists, pushing the limit of complex experimental design strategies.
- This individual will provide advanced data analysis and novel solutions to the molecular biology and data analysis challenges unique to long-read length. Imaginative and creative thinking isrequired; this individual will represent the key contact person between the experimentalists and the bioinformatic and algorithm development scientists so that solutions identified by this individual inform the product to improve SMS sequencer performance. World class knowledge of bioinformatics and its applications is required.
- Must be capable of setting requirements that will change the face of biological information based on the strengths and speed of SMS. In order to also fully understand and integrate knowledge of Company world class molecular biology applications development, this individual will also manage a small team of bioinformaticians responsible for new applications development for next generation sequencing.
- Essential functions/primary responsibilities
- Develop first-of-kind software tools that can translate advanced genomic experimental design strategies into high value sequencing information
- Independently adapt or modify experimental methods to achieve technical objectives.
- Anticipate potential problems and design preventative solutions.
- Determine strategic approach to experimental design.
- Critically analyze complex data, interpret and integrate experiment results
- Maintain complete and thorough documentation in accordance with relevant Company required standards to support patent application and defense as well as other international standards (e.g., ISO compliance, GLP/GMP requirements, etc.) for assigned staff.
- Provide strategic direction and guidance to Scientists, Research Associates and Engineers in their daily experiments and troubleshooting.
- Guide team in matrix environment. Investigate, create and develop new methods and technologies for project advancement.
- Make contributions to scientific literature and conferences.
- Prepare technical reports, product summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses.
- Performs fundamental literature and patent searches related new product and technology opportunities.
- Develop alternative strategies as necessary.
- Recognizes opportunities for in-licensing and internal patent development.
- Prepares patent disclosures and support the legal department in patent preparation.
- Maintain high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature, competing technologies and/or products and attendance of scientific seminars and meetings.
- Communicates the significance of recent scientific developments to peer group.
- Comply with all company safety regulations and procedures.
- May act as spokesperson on corporate research and development and advise top management.
- Anticipate product requirement and coordinate with software development teams to deliver bioinformatics solutions with the SMS product
- May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.
- Willing to collaborate with other departments as a technical consultant.
- Serve as internal technical expert and outside consultant.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED
Ph.D. degree in Bioinformatics (or related science) with extensive experience (> 5 yrs) in Genomics/Molecular-Biology.
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
• Experience typically gained through obtaining Ph.D. + ~ 5 years post degree lab experience
• Management experience of Ph.D. level scientists required
• Industry or national lab experience strongly preferred.

• Expertise in experimental design and interpretation including data acquisition, artifact detection and rejection, signal quality analysis, statistics.
• Trained in the use of computational and data modeling methods and commercial and public domain software tools
• Ability to program in Java, MatLab, and PERL (a bonus)
