Postdoctoral position in Materials Sciences/ Chemistry

Highlights:
  1. This project consists of developing new halogen-free flame retardants (HFFR) for different applications, with focus on:
    1. Understanding the combustion phenomena: mechanisms of flame formation, propagation and extinction and correlation with the FR additive and polymer matrix;
    2. The study of FR mechanisms and associated modelling;
    3. The study of new FR additives and the quantification of synergistic effectiveness in selected FR polymeric systems.
  2. Understanding and following research development within the field of the project by monitoring key scientific publications.
  3. Molecule design and synthesis support. Generation of kg-sample quantities to support customer evaluations.
  4. Polymer processing (compounding at lab scale in internal mixer; extrusion; injection molding)
  5. Sample preparation and organization for analysis (fire, thermal and mechanical performance evaluation)
  6. Screening of different new FR additives in targeted polymer matrices for selection of the best additive composition and loading
  7. Optimization of molecule design and of compounding procedure, following customers’ feedback and in view of the polymer matrix
  8. Ensuring proper communication and technology transfer to application experts in Dow Corning.
  9. Requirements: PhD in Materials Sciences or Chemistry, or a MSc degree together with 4 years of R&D activities
    1. knowledge in FR science and technology: burning behaviour, fire gas analysis, fire retardant
    2. mechanisms and associated modelling
    3. has technical knowledge in plastic industry and technology
    4. has a passion for innovation with an entrepreneurial mindset
    5. is able to think out of the box and to challenge existing paradigms
    6. is motivated, self-starter and self-driven in developing novel technical solutions
    7. is a good communicator with good presentations skills
    8. can work in a team and in a multi-cultural environment
