Postdoctoral and PhD position for DFT Calculations in Materials Science

Highlights:
1. The division of Physical Science and Engineering at the KAUST invites applications for PhD and Postdoctoral positions in computational condensed matter physics. These full-time positions are available from January 1, 2010 and open until filled. Competitive salary and benefits package.

2. This is an ideal time to consider joining the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) family, as the University embarks on a period of unparalleled growth and opportunities abound for career enrichment.

3. King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is one of the biggest, most significant developments in higher education of recent times. A brand new, international graduate-level research institution, located on more than 36 million square metres of land near the Red Sea, we are benefiting from a $multi-billion investment which is already attracting some of the finest minds around.
4. The successful candidate will pursue numerical studies using Density Functional Theory (DFT). The area of possible research interests includes:

• Electronic structure of surfaces and interfaces

• Electronic structure of hybrid devices for spintronics applications

• Transport through nano-structured materials

• Transport properties of spintronics devices

• Interplay between spin transport and spin-orbit coupling

5. The applicant’s creativity will be highly appreciated and strong interactions with theoretical as well as experimental groups in the division and abroad are expected. An outstanding academic and research background as well as good communication skills are required.

6. Requirements for PhD fellow applications:

MSc degree in Physics or Materials Science. Self-motivated and capable of quickly developing new skills, the applicant will have a demonstrated aptitude for learning fast and involving him/herself in new computational techniques.

Requirements for Postdoctoral fellow applications:

7. PhD in Physics or Materials Science, with a deep experience in DFT techniques and computational methods. Highly motivated, the applicant will be independent and capable of formulating, planning, and carrying out a program of innovative and original research.

8. KAUST's globally competitive pay structure is the core of its Total Rewards package. Salaries are offered on a graded system that includes all positions within the University.

9. This is a unique opportunity to lead the way in shaping the scientific breakthroughs of the future through innovative projects utilising DFT.
10. Applicants should submit a letter of interest, a detailed CV, a list of publications, as well as the names and contact details of three references. The letter of interest will explicitly address the qualifications relevant for the position and, for Postdoctoral fellows, briefly present innovative research projects which the candidate wishes to develop during his stay at KAUST.
