2. The research in this group focuses on designing functional mimics of biological membranes to understand the mechanisms of peptide/protein-membrane interaction and membrane fusion.

4. The first project aims at developing novel antibiotic drugs, functional mimics of natural antimicrobial peptides.

We employ synchrotron surface X-ray scattering, fluorescence microscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques to study the mode of action and structure-function relationship of antimicrobial peptides and their mimics, using Langmuir lipid monolayers and lipid bilayers as models of biomembranes.

6. The project is collaboration with Stanford University and University of Pennsylvania.

7. The second project is a part of US Army funded collaborative research within the Center for Molecular Study of Condensed Soft Matter at the Pritzker Institute of Biomedical Science and Engineering and aimed at multi-scale modeling of the biological tissue. Successful applicant will be involved in design and characterisation of biological membrane mimics with cytoskeleton and extracellular matrix components using fluorescence microscopy, AFM, optical tweezers, and X-ray scattering techniques.

Postdoctoral position in Organometallic

Highlights:

1. Applications are invited for postdoctoral research assistant to explore the activation and functionalization of carbon dioxide using palladium catalysts, or the synthesis of new iron catalyts for olefin polymerization, with Professor Nilay Hazari.

2. The project will focus the design of new catalysts followed by mechanistic investigations to understand how the catalysts work and is for an initial period of 12 months.

Postdoctoral position in Physics

Highlights: 1. We are seeking to fill two DOE-funded positions in the area of x-ray scattering. The areas of work include those which exploit the novel capabilities of modern x-ray sources, such as synchrotrons and the x-ray free electron laser.

2. One focus is on novel diffraction theories for structure determination of non-crystallized single biomolecules or ensembles of randomly oriented ones. Another is on surface x-ray diffraction, and possibly on the structure of liquid crystals. Opportunities exist for suitably qualified candidates for either experimental or theoretical work. One position is available for a year and a half in the first instance and the other for a year.

Postdoctoral fellowship in Polymer Chemistry

Highlights:
1. This position is available for one year starting November/December 2009 and can be renewed for subsequent years based on research progress and the availability of funds.

2. The Cellular Engineering and Nano-Therapeutics Laboratory at the University of Michigan, Department of Biomedical Engineering, is seeking an outstanding polymer/materials chemist to be part of a multi-disciplinary team focusing on the development of new polymer therapeutics.

3. Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in polymer/materials chemistry with an extensive experience in controlled free radical polymerization techniques (e.g. RAFT, ATRP).

4. We are particularly interested in candidates with significant experience in synthesis of well-defined polymeric micelles, particles, brushes, and cages. Experience in grafting techniques is also desirable. Candidates should have excellent knowledge of modern chromatographic and analytical techniques including NMR, LC/MS, UV, IR, and GPC; solid knowledge of computers and experience with databases; excellent communication skills in English and ability to interact effectively with other postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students in a fast-paced environment; excellent organization and time management skills; initiative; and ability to plan, carry out, and troubleshoot synthetic steps with minimal supervision.

5. Responsibilities: The primary focus of this position is the design, synthesis, and characterization of new, well-defined, polymeric carriers with unique architectures for delivery of therapeutic (e.g. nucleic acids, peptides, and proteins) and imaging agents. The selected candidate is expected to analyze experimental data, identify synthetic, methodological, or technical problems, and adjust experimental protocols to ensure research progress towards the stated milestones; gather, summarize, and report all results on regular bases.
