PhD position in Environmental Catalysis

Highlights:
  1. PhD position available on “new catalytic materials for advanced oxidation processes”.
  2. Over the past few years numerous drugs and their metabolites have been identified in wastewaters, rivers and sediments. One way to reduce the presence of these contaminants in the environment is through the "in-situ" treatment of the wastewater from the plant. The development of new catalytic oxidation technologies for the removal of these compounds at the point of origin is thus highly interesting. The present research project aims at the improvement of the advanced oxidation processes of Fenton and catalytic ozonation for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment by means of the design of new catalytic materials and the in-situ generation of hydrogen peroxide. H2O2 is industrially synthesized through alkyl anthraquinone.
  3. Recently, due to negative economic and environmental aspects of this process, there has been a strong interest in replacing that with one in which hydrogen peroxide can be produced by direct reaction between H2 and O2 or as in situ in the reaction media. Nevertheless, there are some drawbacks in this process, being the main ones the risk of explosivity of the O2/H2mixture, and the low solubility of the gases in solution. To overcome this problem, in the group of Heterogeneous
  4. Catalysis we are currently working in the design of catalysts for in-situ generation of hydrogen peroxide in aqueous solutions using other sources of hydrogen. We are applying this process in the degradation of organic industrial wastewater pollutants, e.g. phenol, by means of Fenton process
  5. For the characterisation of materials, different techniques will be used: physisorption (BET area and porosity), chemisorption, XRD (X-Ray Diffraction), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), TPD (in-situ temperature-programmed desorption), TGA (thermogravimetric analysis), among others. For wastewater characterisation, liquid chromatography will be used, as well as TOC (total organic carbon), COD (chemical oxygen demand), BOD (biochemical oxygen demand), among other techniques.
  6. Application and candidates:
Candidates should have a bachelor and/or a master degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry. Good command of English is required. Experience in experimental work will be evaluated positively.
Interested candidates should send CV and academic expedient (subjects, credits and grade) to Dr. Sandra Contreras (sandra.contreras@urv.cat), together with an expression of interest letter.
  7. The candidate will be enrolled in the doctorate program of the Chemical Engineering department at the University Rovira I Virgili. PhD will be done in the base of a scholarship for the first two years and labour contract for the remaining period (1 or 2 years). Net salary is ca. 1000-1050 euros/month during the first two years.

  8. About the research group, the University and the PhD program:
The research group CATHETER (Heterogeneous Catalysis) has a wide experience in the design, synthesis and characterization of new catalysts for different environmental and industrial applications, in close collaboration with public administration and private companies.

Postdoctoral position in Computational Biology and Chemogenomics

Highlights:
  1. This position is in the new Computational Biology team within the section of Cancer Therapeutics.
  2. The team’s goal is to develop and apply novel computational biology and chemogenomic resources to support drug discovery within the centre.
  3. The section of Cancer Therapeutics boasts a very large collection of pharmacological and cancer disease relevant data as well as access to novel, large scale, internal and external chemogenomic data resources. These combined, datasets have the potential to deliver valuable knowledge to guide cancer drug discovery.
  4. The successful candidate will apply their programming skills to collate and handle large, frequently updated, heterogeneous datasets relating to cancer drug discovery and will analyse and model these data, and integrate them into a structured drug discovery database.
  5. The candidate will develop experience in a drug discovery environment, exposure to the drug discovery process, and knowledge in the emerging chemogenomics field (the merger of biological and chemical knowledge at large scale). In addition, the candidate will bolster their programming and data mining skills.

Postdoctoral Positions in Archaeology Center

Highlight:
1.      The Archaeology Center, the Department of Anthropology, and the Human Origins Program at Stanford University are seeking to appoint a postdoctoral scholar with expertise in the application of ancient DNA to archaeological problems. This is a primary research position requiring one course to be taught during the academic year and participation with the Archaeology and Human Origins faculty, as well as with the broader intellectual community.
2.      The appointment carries a twelve-month salary commensurate with the University Provost established minimum pay levels based on research experience. The appointment may be eligible for renewal based on satisfactory performance, the existence of funding, and programmatic need.

Postdoctoral positions in Stem Cell Biology at University of Sheffield, UK

Highlights:
1                Two Postdoctoral Positions are available to work at the Centre for Stem Cell Biology of the University of Sheffield, UK. The candidates will join an active research program, led by Dr. Marcelo Rivolta, aiming to develop a stem cell-based treatment for deafness.
2                A postdoctoral Research Associate position is available as part of an MRC Translational Stem Cell Research Grant, awarded to Dr Marcelo Rivolta. The Research Associate will participate in experiments designed to test the potential of human auditory stem cells in animal models. Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent qualification and must have experience in the mammalian auditory system and surgical expertise with small rodents. Knowledge of hearing functional tests (DPOAEs, ABRs, etc) and/or stem cell culture techniques would be highly desirable.
