6. The Newton International Fellowships Scheme is an initiative of the UK’s leading academies - the British Academy, The Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Royal Society. The Scheme has been established to select the very best early stage post-doctoral researchers from all over the world and enable them to work at UK research institutions for a period of two years. The Scheme covers researchers in all disciplines covered by the three academies – natural and social sciences, engineering and humanities.

7. Objectives of the Newton International Fellowships Scheme

8. To ensure the UK engages with the best post-doctoral researchers, across all disciplines of natural and social sciences, engineering and the humanities, from around the world.

9. To provide an opportunity for post-doctoral researchers at an early career stage from any country outside the UK to work at a UK research institution for up to two years.

10. To foster long-term relations between Newton Fellows and the UK research base through the establishment of an alumni programme for former Fellows of this Scheme. The alumni programme will include the provision of further funding for Newton Fellows for up to 10 years for follow-on activities,to enable links with UK based researchers to be maintained and developed. This is expected to facilitate, in the longer term, improved access to international centres of excellence for UK-based researchers.

12. The closing date for the third round of applications will be 1 February 2010. Results will be announced no sooner than 5 months after the closing date.

13. Duration and Level of Funding: Fellowships are tenable for a period of two years. Funding will consist of £24,000 per annum for subsistence costs, and up to £8,000 per annum research expenses, as well as a one-off payment of up to £2,000 for relocation expenses.

14. Alumni funding for Newton Fellows:

15. Newton Fellows may also be eligible to receive up to £6,000 annually for up to ten years following the tenure of their Fellowship to support networking activities with UK-based researchers.

16. Contribution to Overheads: Newton International Fellowships will not be costed on the basis of full economic costing (FEC). Instead, awards will include a contribution to the overheads incurred, at a rate of 50% of the total award to the visiting researcher. (For example: award is £34,000 in the first year (£24,000 + £8,000 + £2,000), contribution to overheads is £17,000; total value award for first year is £51,000.)

PhD Position in UK 2010- 2011

1. £750 will be paid to the student over the academic year irrespective of the family’s financial means.

2. The student must be classed as a “new” undergraduate student at University of Bolton being charged £3,290 tuition fees. Fees must be paid via tuition fee loan or student must be self funded.

Postdoctoral position in Supramolecular Bioconjugates in UK

Highlights:
1. Applications are invited to work on an exploratory project to study the formation and structure of supramolecular bioconjugates en route to discrete amyloid aggregates. Applicants should have (or be about to receive) a PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, structural biology, polymer science, or a related area, and be ready to think outside of their formal background and field of training.

Postdoctoral position in Druggability of Protein-Protein Interfaces in UK

Highlights:
1. Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research scientist to work with Dr. Alessio Ciulli in the Department of Chemistry on an interdisciplinary programme developing a novel fragment-based strategy to investigate the druggability of protein-protein interfaces with respect to modulation by small molecules, and implications for drug design.

2. The project will involve applying a combination of protein engineering and biophysical and structural techniques to study protein-ligand and protein-protein molecular recognition, including protein X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry and surface plasmon resonance. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join the Cambridge Molecular Therapeutics Programme (see http://www.cmtp.cam.ac.uk/CMTP_intro.html ), a collaborative and interdisciplinary initiative based at Cambridge to explore new strategies for the discovery and development of drugs against disease such as cancer and tuberculosis. The laboratories are exceptionally well equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for all aspects of modern chemical and structural biology.

4. Applicants should have (or be about to receive) a PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, structural biology, or a related area. Experience in molecular biology, protein purification and with appropriate biophysical techniques is essential; some experience in synthetic organic chemistry would be advantageous. The ability to work in a creative and dynamic research environment at the interface of chemical biology and drug discovery is paramount. Teaching position in UK


Highlights:
1. This important role within the Department of Chemistry has responsibility for keeping the Department's lecture theatres and the meeting rooms running smoothly, including ensuring all the equipment is working correctly, and providing general assistance in a teaching laboratory.

2. Saturday morning working is required during term time.

3. Duties will include setting up all aspects of the lecture theatres and meeting rooms and working in the teaching laboratory during the practical chemistry courses and outside term time, dealing with students' general requirements and assisting the preparation of the laboratory.

4. With a science related BTEC or equivalent, the successful candidate will be able to think clearly and quickly when working under pressure, use their own initiative, have good communication skills and be computer literate.
