Highlights:
The Laboratory of Asymmetric Catalysis and Synthesis at the EPFL offers a Postdoctoral position in Organic Chemistry. The initially appointment will be for one year and may be renewed upon mutual agreements. More information on the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering of the EPFL can be found at http://isic.epfl.ch/index.html.
The research of our laboratory is situated at the stimulating interface between organic synthesis and catalysis. One principal objective of our research is the development of new reaction methodology which is of broad utility to organic synthesis and target natural product synthesis.
We are particularly interested in the design of selective and sustainable transitionmetal- catalyzed catalytic reactions that operate trough novel modes of activation and which will allow for a rapid increase in molecular complexity. In that context, we are applying these methods in the synthesis of complex natural products with intriguing structural and pharmacological properties. These synthetic efforts will enable studies of fundamental biochemical questions associated with the target molecules. For a more detailed description of our recent research activities see: http://isic.epfl.ch/page-46530-en.htmlYour Tasks: (I) The successful candidate will work on the development of selective transition-metal catalyzed reactions that are initiated by the activation of an inert chemical bond. The project comprises reaction scouting and optimization as well as the design and preparation of the catalysts/ligands. You will also exploit the application potential of the respective reactivity and initiate deeper studies on the reaction mechanism.
(II) A Project comprising the synthesis of biologically relevant and structurally interesting natural products are as well available. You are expected to develop and execute of a synthetic route that leads to the desired target molecule as well of devising synthetic analogs.
Requirements: Suitable candidates hold a Ph.D degree in Chemistry. A thorough background and experience in organic synthesis and/or homogenous catalysis is desirable.
Highly motivated candidates that seek scientific challenges within a young research team and that have the willingness to mentor junior co-workers are highly encouraged to apply. A possible entrance date is February 2011 or later. Please send your applications containing your CV, copies of transcripts, names and contacts of references and cover/motivation letter to:
