Highlights:
1. Within the topic “Chemicals in the Environment (CITE)” the Department of Effect-Directed Analysis invites applications for a PhD student (f/m) to work on:
“Development and application of tools for effect-directed analysis of effluents from wastewater treatment plants“
2. European surface waters are contaminated with a multitude of pollutants, many of them originating from wastewater treatment plants. Most of these compounds are polar, multifunctional and not accessible to GC-MS analysis. These compounds including dyes, personal care products, biocides, pharmaceuticals and others may cause adverse effects to aquatic organisms and pose a risk to the ecosystem and to human health. Effect-directed analysis combines biotesting with fractionation procedures and chemical analysis to isolate and identify major toxicants.
3. The main task of the PhD student will be to develop an integrated methodology for effect-directed analysis of wastewater treatment plants with a focus on polar compounds using HPLC-based fractionation and LC-HRMS (LTQ-Orbitrap) together with state-of-the-art computer tools for toxicant identification. The toxicological endpoint directing the procedure will be selected according to the results of pilot experiments at selected wastewater treatment plants.
4. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who is well educated in analytical chemistry with expertise and interest in HPLC techniques and mass spectrometry. The candidate should be enthusiastic and skilful in computer work and open for extending his expertise towards ecotoxicology and biotesting. We presume a specific interest in questions related to environmental pollution and its effects, the readiness for interdisciplinary and international collaboration and the capability of working independently.
5. For further information please contact:
Dr. Werner Brack: phone: ++49-(0)341-235-1531, mail: werner.brack@ufz.de
The post is based in Leipzig (Germany).
Salary will be according to the appropriate civil service level 13/2 (TVöD). Women are explicitly encouraged to apply in order to increase their share in science and research. Physically handicapped persons will be favoured if they are equally qualified.
6. The PhD students participate in the newly established Graduate School HIGRADE.
7. Applications should be sent to the Personnel Department of the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research, PO Box 500136, D-04318 Leipzig, Germany, or by email to application@ufz.de until 15.05.2009 (code digit 33/2009). Applications are accepted until the position is filled.
