Description:
To help a trainee initiate a career in cardiovascular research while obtaining significant research results. Supports individuals before they are ready for some stage of independent research. MD, PhD, DO or equivalent at activation. Individuals with no more than three years postdoctoral research training at the time of award activation.
Special funding is also available from Philips Medical System for resuscitation research, the American Academy of Neurology for stroke research, and the Pulmonary Hypertension Association for the study of pulmonary hypertension through basic or clinical research.

Stipend Detail: Trainee Stipend on a sliding scale from $37,000 - $47,000, plus $1,000 fringe benefits. No dependent allowances.Institution may supplement stipend.

Other Eligibility: Awardee must devote at least 80% effort to research or activities directly related to research. Not intended for individuals of faculty rank (Exception: MD's or MD/PhD's with clinical responsibilities who need instructor or similar title to see patients, but who devote at least 80% full-time to research). Maximum of 2 years of American Heart Association Affiliate postdoctoral fellowship support per individual. Awardee may not hold another Association award, or apply for another Affiliate award, concurrently. (May apply for Association grant in final year.) Institution may supplement stipend.
Candidate must have no more than 3 years postdoctoral research experience at time of award activation. Candidate must provide documentation of time spent as a trainee. Application must be written by the fellow. Research committee requires a letter signed by both the sponsor and applicant that indicates the applicant wrote the application and discusses the availability of funds to support the research.An applicant may submit only one Affiliate application per deadline.
